BDA delivers training at HMP Askham Grange

BDA Training has been out and about again this time delivering training at HMP Askham Grange. This training was for the Novus Offender Education Team members. With the incidence of dyslexia around the 31-56% within the offender population it is extremely gratifying to know that there is a real commitment from Novus to invest in developing the skills and knowledge of their teams to support the individuals they work with effectively. This group, and other future groups, will be completing the accredited BDA programme in Hidden Difficulties.

This training programme is particularly useful as it explores the range of neurodiversity looking at signs and indicators, support strategies and how neurodiversity impacts on the individual. It also provides delegates with an accredited outcome.

Whenever we work with people working in this sector we are always struck by their dedication and commitment to supporting individuals. Often offenders will have had a very negative educational experience and are resistant to attending educational provision. There is also a lot of evidence that supports the fact that disengagement from education can be a risk factor for offending behaviour.
Yet for many this is often the first time that they achieve real progress and qualifications. It is a sad state of affairs where someone has to be in prison in order to access an education that supports their learning needs.

BDA is really looking forward to working with these teams more over the coming weeks.
