In Memory of Sally Brighton

We are honoured to have received donations in memory of Sally Brighton – a fantastic woman and an extraordinary teacher, who dedicated her professional life to helping young adults who felt like the education system had overlooked them. Her passion, dedication and compassion shines through all the tributes made in her memory. Her son, Jonathon talked about his mum, telling us:
“She was an extraordinary teacher who began her career as a high school English teacher and embraced the challenge of working with additional needs pupils. She saw it as her duty to help these young adults navigate a comprehensive education system that often overlooked them.
Her commitment extended beyond the classroom—she worked with students excluded from school due to learning and or behavioral difficulties, offering them the guidance and support they desperately needed. Her patient and caring approach to the challenges of reading and writing led to remarkable success, transforming the lives of many of them.
I vividly remember attending the wedding of one such student, who had dropped out completely and his life was spiraling, he always credited my mum as a mentor and life-changing friend. She held a special place in their hearts as the person who believed in them when others had given up.
Her curious and ever-learning mind kept her engaged with the latest techniques and breakthroughs in teaching, particularly in areas like dyslexia and other English-based learning challenges.
Supporting the BDA feels like the perfect way to honour her memory. It reflects the love and dedication she continues to inspire in our family and the community she touched so profoundly.
Leaving a gift in memory of a loved one is a loved way of celebrating and remembering their life. Remembering a loved one with a gift to the British Dyslexia Association, however large or small, will ensure that we can continue to deliver our vital work and help change lives for the better for dyslexic people of all ages.
