“ Penny Modena, was a founding member of Dyslexia House Association in Medway Kent, our treasurer who fought tirelessly over many years to raise awareness about Dyslexia. It is with terrible sadness in our hearts that Sadly Penny who had recovered successfully from an operation for Cancer, contracted Covid-19 as a severe asthmatic, Penny passed away on Monday Morning, leaving her Husband Dario, their children and grandchildren without her kind warmth and support”

About Penny
Motivated by her own children who have varying degrees of dyslexia, Penny trained to be a Montessori teacher in 1994. She chose Montessori training as it seemed to be very sensorial, very hands on and very child-friendly. It appeared that it would suit children that had difficulties learning at school and it has informed her teaching with all children since.
Pennies middle son was extremely dyslexic and it was the total frustration with schools at the time that led her to think that there must be other ways to help him achieve what in her heart she knew he was capable of.
Penny qualified as a teacher of primary aged children with Specific Learning Difficulties in October 2000 and has been teaching special needs children ever since.
In 2005 Penny updated my RSA SpLD Teaching Certificate to include elements of assessment and was assessing children with Specific Learning Difficulties as well as teaching.
Her greatest joy when teaching children was seeing the little ‘light bulb’ turn on and knowing they have understood something that was before a mystery to them.
