We are delighted to announce the appointment of renowned children's author Sally Gardner as an Ambassador for the British Dyslexia Association.

Sally Gardner is the renowned author of children's books for varying ages, including most recently, 'The Tindims of Rubbish Island'. She has won both the Costa Children's Book Award, and the Carnegie Medal for her book 'Maggot Moon'. She has sold over two million books in the UK.

Sally describes having always had a love of words, and growing up faced challenges throughout her school years caused by lack of understanding and support for dyslexia. Despite this, after having been classified as "unteachable", Sally learnt to read at the age of 14, and never stopped. She knows just how the confidence of young people can be damaged without the correct support in place.

Sally believes that all children are capable of telling stories, in their own unique way, and believes that dyslexia can indeed be a gift. She is proud to be working with the British Dyslexia Association as an Ambassador and is excited about what the partnership can achieve for future generations, showing us all what is possible if we only approach words in a different way.

"Ironically, when I went into writing, where I assumed my dyslexia would be a true disability, it turned out to be the start of something amazing.

I strongly believe that dyslexia is like a Rubik’s Cube: it takes time to work out how to deal with it but once you do, it can be the most wonderful gift."

Commenting on Sally Gardner becoming Ambassador, Nick Posford, CEO, British Dyslexia Association, said: “Thank you Sally for joining our team. You are an inspiration to so many. By talking about how dyslexia has played a role in becoming the person that you are today, you show young people how they can learn to embrace their dyslexia, growing into confident adults capable of exceptional things. We look forward to working with you over the coming months, building awareness of dysleixa, and inspiring people of all ages with dyslexia to follow their dreams across the UK."
