School children's app, 'Dimming Dyslexia' wins BT Young Pioneers Award

Wednesday 4 May 2022

The creators of 'Dimming Dyslexia' won the BT Young Pioneer Award in 2020 for their app design and finally got to celebrate at the top of the BT Tower in Central London.

The talented team is made up of three students: Dorothy, Sonia and Justine and their app tackled a range of issues facing students in year 7 or above.

The app aimed to analyse texts and resources that students use and translate them into an easier format to comprehend such as cartoons, videos or certain fonts. The app could be used as a personal tool so teachers do not need to compromise the lesson, unlike other apps or solutions.

As part of the prize, the team were awarded 10K and worked on a prototype with Mobility Net and Apps for Good.

Although it has not been taken to the next stage, the learning has been invaluable for all involved.

The remainder of the award has been kindly donated to the BDA, and CEO, Gillian Ashley attended a celebratory event at the BT Tower to meet and thank the team.

We wish Dorothy, Sonia and Justine all the very best in their future direction and would like to thank them for their support and their dedication in breaking down barriers for the dyslexic community.
