My Dyslexia Story: Jo Odams
Tuesday 3 September 2024

I was 16 years old at it was at college when I was studying health and social care. Secondary school was challenging filled with constant low confidence in my academic abilities and misunderstanding from teachers. I am one of three girls and shared the challenge of dyslexia with Selina and Cheryl making me one of three triplets. My mum and dad fought hard to get us the help and support we needed but more importantly, they loved us unconditionally, believed in us, and measured us as humans, not just an exam result or certificate!

"Kindnesses costs nothing and comes in many shapes and forms."
Dyslexia's positive impact included an unwavering level of resilience and determination to do your best despite the challenges ahead. The ability to problem solve in ways that are not always obvious to others. Inspiring others by sharing my journey the good and bad. Always dreaming big and reflecting on progress and achievements.
The biggest challenge is the amount of time academic writing takes, so much so it feels like the learning is lost. Stigma and misconceptions about dyslexia and learning needs.

Support over the years
My family, my boyfriend, friends and a head teacher at junior school - at age 7 I was unable to read he agreed to meet with me every break time for about a year I was then able to catch up with my reading. A college lecturer at Sheffield College provided extra time and support with my assignment and could see my potential plus many good friends who have proof read for me. Having a hobby of playing football was a great source of fun and confidence building. What I lost in the classroom I gained in the pitch, win, loose, or draw.

Family goals
Our achievements are; My sister Selina obtaining a degree in her forties while working as a Warrant Officer in the army and a full-time mom. Cheryl obtained her MSc during Covid while working full time. For me, it's sharing my life with two sisters that inspire me to be and do the best that I can. I am now lecturer as a nurse, obtaining an MSc and completing 1 year of my PhD nursing and teaching. Two vocations that have served me well and enabled me to achieve more than I ever thought possible.

My advice for someone who has recently been diagnosed with dyslexia:
Be proud to ask for help. Experiment with assistive technology to work out what is right for you. Know you are not alone. It's a challenging gift!
