Dyslexia Awareness Week 2018
In 2018, Dyslexia Awareness Week (DAW) took place from Monday 1st to Sunday 7th October 2018 with World Dyslexia Awareness Day celebrated on Thursday 4th October.
Our theme for DAW was #21stCenturyDyslexia
Through the week we explored how technology can assist people in school, in the workplace and at home. Fundraising activities during that week included a 'Go Green for Dyslexia' day where we asked people to wear green or to light up their building with a green light to help raise awareness of dyslexia, and a 'No Pens Day' where we challenged schools to find new and creative ways of capturing learning that didn't rely on writing.
We held a free training webinar on 'Realising potential through enabling technologies' presented by Abi James from the BDA Technology Committee.
We released free training modules for schools and organisations looking at how to use assistive technology effectively, and how to create a dyslexia-friendly learning or working environment.
The week ended on a high note with the Dyslexia Awareness Week Awards. These recognise and celebrate achievements such as 'Unsung Hero' for the volunteer of the year, the Dyslexia-Friendly School/College or University of the Year, the Jean Hutchins Accessibility Award and the Local Dyslexia Association of the Year.
We also announced the winners of the DAW competition celebrating the creative talents of people with dyslexia. We received outstanding entries from artists, writers and animators.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make DAW 2018 such a success!
